The fastest way to make a desk feel better is rarely a new computer. It is the small things around it: a screen at the right height, a soft surface under your hands, no cables hanging down, decent light in the evening. Most of these upgrades cost less than a game, and each one fixes a specific annoyance you notice every day.
This list ranks them by how much they change for the money. Start at the top and stop when the annoyances are gone.
How we picked
- One problem, one fix. Each pick solves something concrete: neck strain, a cluttered surface, glare, missing ports. If you do not have the problem, skip the pick.
- Cheap first. Most picks sit at the low end of their category. The exceptions, a premium light bar and a solid oak monitor shelf, are there because nothing cheaper does the same job as well, and each has a cheaper alternative next to it.
- Real limits included. Every pick has a Skip it if line. A cheap arm on the wrong desk, or a hub on the wrong laptop, is money wasted.
Best overall: a monitor arm
Nothing changes a desk as much for so little as a monitor arm. The Amazon Basics gas spring arm lifts your screen to eye level, frees the space under it, and lets you pull it closer or push it back. It holds one screen from 15 to 27 inches and up to 7 kg, clamps to desks 1 to 10 cm thick or goes through a grommet hole, and rotates for portrait use. Out of the box the joints are stiff: set the spring tension to your monitor's weight or the screen will drift.
Amazon Basics Monitor arm
A basic gas spring arm for one 15 to 27 in monitor weighing 4.4 to 15.4 lb, with clamp and grommet mounts.
1
Skip it if your monitor is larger than 27 inches or heavier than 7 kg, or if your desk is an IKEA LAGKAPTEN, which IKEA says is not suitable for a screen stand. Our monitor arm picks cover heavier screens.
Best budget pick: a desk mat
A mat makes a desk look finished, quiets the keyboard and gives the mouse a consistent surface. The Logitech Desk Mat Studio Series is 70 x 30 cm and only 2 mm thick, with a spill-resistant top and stitched edges, in grey or three pastel colours. For gaming, the SteelSeries QcK Heavy XXL goes to 90 x 40 cm with a thick rubber base, room for a full keyboard and wide low-sensitivity swipes. The Logitech G840 XL is the same size at only 3 mm thick and plain black, so it suits a work desk as well. If your PC sits under the desk, the Corsair MM700 RGB Extended adds an RGB edge and two USB ports in its corner, handy for a wired mouse or a wireless dongle close to your hand.

Logitech G840 XL Gaming Mouse Pad
- 900 x 400 x 3 mm
- Cloth

Skip it if you want wrist cushioning (the Logitech mat is thin), or if you are allergic to latex: its base is natural rubber.
Best for cables: a tray and a clip kit
Cables are what make a desk look messy, and two cheap IKEA products fix most of them. The IKEA FÖRSÄSONG is a steel basket that clamps under the desk, without drilling, and holds the power strip and its chargers. The IKEA TRIXIG set adds 150 clips and adhesive holders to run each cable straight to it. Our cable management guide shows the order to do it in.

IKEA TRIXIG 150-Piece Cable Management Set
- Complete kit
Skip it if your desk is thicker than 4 cm (the tray clamps will not fit), or if you rent and cannot use nails: stick to the adhesive holders.
Best cheap lamp: IKEA TERTIAL
A dark desk tires your eyes, because the bright screen is the only light source. The IKEA TERTIAL is one of the cheapest ways to fix that: a spring-balanced steel arm that you aim where you need it, clamped to the desk or fixed to the wall. The bulb is sold separately, so put a warm LED in it for the evening.
IKEA Light
IKEA's classic steel architect lamp: it clamps to the desk edge, the arm and head adjust, and it costs very little.
Desk lamp
Skip it if your screen picks up reflections easily: a badly aimed lamp causes glare, which the light bar below avoids by design.
Best premium pick: a monitor light bar
The BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 is the one pick on this list that is not cheap, and the one we would buy next if the budget allows. It clips on top of the monitor, lights the desk without reflecting on the screen, and adds a backlight that lowers the contrast between the screen and a dark room. Colour temperature runs from warm to cool, and a presence sensor turns it on when you sit down. It fits curved monitors too.
If you do not need the backlight, the BenQ ScreenBar Pro costs less, lights a wider area of the desk and also switches itself on when you sit down and off a few minutes after you leave. Its clamp fits monitors from very thin to 6.5 cm thick.

Skip them if the budget is tight: the TERTIAL does most of the job for a fraction of the cost. Our desk lighting picks compare the options.
Best for work: a USB-C hub
If you plug a laptop into a monitor every morning, the Anker Nano USB-C Hub (8-in-1) turns one USB-C port into two HDMI outputs, fast USB-A and USB-C ports and SD and microSD readers, with up to 85 W of pass-through charging.
Anker Accessory
A compact aluminum USB-C hub with two 4K 60 Hz HDMI outputs, three 10 Gbps USB ports, card readers and 85 W pass-through charging.
Dock / hub
Skip it if you use a Mac with two external screens (macOS mirrors them instead of extending), use Linux, which Anker does not support, or need wired Ethernet.
Best headset stand: Razer Base Station V2 Chroma
A headset on the desk takes space, and one on the floor gets stepped on. The Razer Base Station V2 Chroma is tall enough for large over-ear headsets and earns its spot with two USB 3.1 ports and a 3.5 mm jack with a built-in DAC, handy when the PC's ports are under the desk.
Razer Accessory
An aluminum headset stand with a Chroma RGB base, two USB 3.1 ports and a 3.5 mm jack with a built-in DAC.
Headset stand
Skip it if your desk is not a Razer RGB setup and you only want a hook: the base takes 12 cm of desk, and the lighting runs through Razer Synapse.
Best for laptops: a laptop stand
Working on a laptop screen all day means looking down all day. The Razer Adjustable Laptop Stand raises it from about 5 to 28 cm, with two pivot points for height and angle, and turns the laptop into a second screen next to your monitor.
Razer Accessory
An anodized aluminum stand that lifts laptops up to 18 inches as high as 28 cm, with a tilting arm and a vented tray.
Laptop stand
Skip it if you carry it daily: it weighs 1.1 kg. It is also good value in France and a bit expensive in the US. On a wood desk, the fixed-height Oakywood Laptop Riser lifts a slim laptop about 15 cm on solid oak and a very small steel base.
Oakywood Accessory
A solid oak laptop stand on a compact black steel base that lifts the screen about 15 cm toward eye level.
Laptop stand
Best monitor riser: Oakywood Desk Shelf
Two monitors, or one ultrawide, on their stands eat the whole back of the desk. The Oakywood Desk Shelf is a 105 x 23 cm solid oak board on black steel legs that lifts them by 11 cm and gives you a second level underneath for a keyboard you push away, a notebook or headphones. It is rated for 100 kg and covered for 5 years. It is not cheap: you pay for real oak rather than laminate.
Oakywood Accessory
A 105 cm solid oak monitor shelf on black steel legs that raises two screens or an ultrawide and frees space underneath.
Shelf
Skip it if your monitor feet are deeper than 23 cm, you use a clamp-on arm (the arm already frees the space), or you want a cheap fix: a monitor arm does more for the money.
Best compact speakers: Creative Pebble V3
Laptop speakers make calls and videos sound thin. The Creative Pebble V3 run on one USB-C cable for power and sound, add Bluetooth for the phone, and take almost no desk space.
Creative Speaker
Two small round desktop speakers powered and fed by a single USB-C cable, with Bluetooth 5.0 and an aux input.
Compact
Skip it if you want real bass or volume. For music, see our desktop speaker picks.

Questions people ask
What is the most useful cheap desk upgrade?
A monitor arm. It puts the screen at eye level, frees the space under it and lets you move it closer or further. A budget gas spring arm like the Amazon Basics model handles most screens up to 27 inches and 7 kg.
Is a monitor light bar better than a desk lamp?
For screen work, yes. A light bar like the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 lights the desk without reflecting on the screen and takes no desk space. A lamp like the IKEA TERTIAL costs far less but causes glare if badly aimed.
